I met Marissa and Kenneth through a past Savanna Sutton Bride and Groom (Spencer and Jennifer). Marissa was in Jennifer’s wedding and I was lucky enough to snag her as a future Savanna Sutton Bride! Since Spencer and Jennifer’s wedding, Marissa and I have been in contact several times. We scheduled an engagement session for late June in downtown OKC. We had some ideas that were specific to them we wanted to incorporate. The two of them are avid “hammock-ers”. Kenneth proposed to Marissa while they were getting ready to hammock. We were able to snap a few photographs of them (even if we did get kicked out of a couple of places ;). Kenneth and Marissa are also in the medical profession. We wanted to incorporate a “fun” portion of the engagement session and thought the two of them wearing their scrubs would be super cute!
As we were about to start the session, Marissa let me know that they were “awkward” but would embrace it. How many of us feel that way when being photographed? I know I do! Being downtown, with lots of people around to watch, while you are having your engagement session photographed can seem daunting. I’m telling you, you would never know these two felt awkward. If they hadn’t have told me that, I would have re-assured them they were naturals.
There are a few key tips we used to help Marissa and Kenneth feel comfortable, and as though they were not being photographed. Side note: I do this every couple! We played a few “getting to know you” games.. no not the super cheesy kind, just sincere questions that made them feel more relaxed. I would show them how I wanted them to end up, but told them to work their way into that position in whatever way they felt comfortable. Most of the time it’s as simple as “ok- I want you to tell your fiance one of your favorite memories you have together”. Marissa and Kenneth ROCKED this session, and if this is what “embracing awkwardness” looks like, then I want a big dose!! I love it!
Here are a few of my favorite images from their downtown OKC engagement session:
