How to Prepare for your Engagement Session

I often get a lot of questions on what to wear for an engagement session.  I have put together a few tips to help you prepare for your upcoming engagement session! First of all, one of the most common questions or comments I receive is if they should do an engagement session at all.

  1. To do an Engagement Session or Not to do an Engagement Session?

Absolutely! If you have hired me to shoot your wedding, you should 100% hire me for the engagement session! I know what you’re thinking, she just wants to increase her income..here’s the reality. Doing an engagement session will give your photographer a chance to see how you and your significant other interact in front of the camera.  Most couples say they feel awkward in front of the camera, and you definitely don’t want that reflected in your wedding day images.  You will feel much more comfortable on your wedding day, knowing how your photographer directs you.

Another comment I often hear is ” I won’t use all those images”.  There are plenty of ways to utilize your engagement pictures such as wedding decor, printing a canvas off to showcase at your reception, save the date, or even a wedding day guest book that houses all the images for your guest to see as they sign in.

2. Get Creative and Do Something Fun.

Sometimes it just takes a little creativity to come up with something that’s unique to you as a couple.  Let’s come up with something fun to show that off!  Having a special location that’s meaningful to you is always a great way to showcase that.  Here are a few ideas.

Coffee Date:

Love getting coffee as a couple? Plan a coffee date for your engagement session! Spencer and Jennifer had their engagement session at their local Starbucks! Aren’t they the cutest?

Cool Car-

I love when couples tell me they want to use a car that they have. Crystal and Johnathan used their Jeep during their session! We shot this during summer so it was appropriate for the season and really brought out who they were as a couple!

What about combining coffee and cars!! YES!!

Brett and Tiffany had their engagement session during winter and decided to incorporate this Jeep Cherokee into the session, along with some custom coffee mugs that they drink out of in the mornings! How cute!

3. Get Dressed Up.

It’s not everyday you get to throw on a fancy pair of heels, a dress and take pictures with your love! Make an appointment to book hair and makeup the day of your engagement pictures.  It makes such a huge difference! Don’t forget to add small touches of accessories! Get your nails done to show off that beautiful ring!

4. Don’t be Afraid to Utilize your Wedding Day Venue.

Using your wedding venue might not be an option if you are doing a destination wedding, but if you are local or within a short drive from your venue, check with them to see about coordinating a time with your photographer where you can have the venue to yourself.  This gives you and your photographer a good idea of the space and what areas will work well for photographing your portraits on the wedding day!  It also will be cohesive with the wedding day pictures given it’s the same location.

Jennifer and Carter wed at Waddell Vineyards and shot their engagement session there.  The vineyard was green and full of life.  Their wedding was in October so they got to have photographs during two seasons at one location!

5. Showcase your Style and Personality.

Not the dressy type, that’s okay! Let the outfit you wear, reflect your style as a couple. Make sure you wear something that is cohesive as a couple and clothes that are not too tight or too lose.  Remember: wear clothing that compliments each other but doesn’t match!  There’s nothing worse than being worried about your clothes during a session. If your signature style is wearing a certain lip color, wear it. Bring accessories that reflect who you are!

7. Bring ALL the pets!

I love when a client includes their pet in a session.  Pets become family so it makes sense that we would want them to be documented with us not only during your engagement session but also the wedding too!  Make sure to have a family member available to bring them at the beginning or the end of the session! If you have your pets with you for the entire session, you will be stressing about their well-being being the entire time so make sure to make arrangements for someone who can take them home after their part is finished!

With all that being said, the most important thing is to have fun and don’t stress! Make a date out of your engagement session! Grab dinner afterwards since you will be dressed up! Visit with your wedding photographer about your engagement session and the ideas you have. Don’t worry if you don’t have anything in mind.  I send out a questionnaire that prompts a few ideas that will be unique to you. Remember to trust your photographer.  If you bring a list of poses you found on pinterest, it totally takes away from the creativity process.  Lastly, this is the best opportunity to get to know your wedding day photographer.  Remember NO AWKWARD FEELING on your wedding day if you have already spent a few hours knowing how your photographer shoots and directs you! I hope this information helps you as you plan for your engagement session.
